A Review of the book

Flowers

and

their

Spiritual

Significance

Published by the Sri Aurobindo Society

This small book contains for all its compactness, a world of beauty and significance. It has been designed with an aspiration for beauty and its pages are imbued with the love of those who created it.

One finds in this work quotations from the Mother that have rarely been seen before along with wonderful examples of Haiku on Nature, an article from a beloved author of mine, Gerald Durrell, whose every book I have collected and read again and again, and other articles I have not seen published elsewhere,

There are very useful charts on many subjects such as:

1. “Flowers whose spiritual significance has reference to the name of gods or goddesses.”

2. “Flowers where the spiritual name matches perfectly with the common name or with the way the flowers are used traditionally.”

3. “Flowers where the spiritual name is closely related to the colour.”

4. “Flowers as elements”

5. “Flowers we use in our daily lives”

Then too, there are lists of fragrant flowers, flowers grouped according to the parts of the being, vital, mental, psychic and more.

Each chapter one opens is like a fragrant gift offered with love and great care. I felt blessed reading all of them. Here are a few.

1. The Mother in Japan

2. Each Petal is a Thought

3. The Clock of Nature

4. A Play of Nature

5. The Mother’s Ways with Flowers

…and so much more!

I highly recommend this book to all who grow and care for flowers, arrange them, offer them to the Divine and, above all, love them.

This is one of the finest books one could give as a gift to a friend, mother, father, or family member, something to be read again and again and treasured forever.
